Ohio Public Hunting Areas to Be Stocked with Ring-Neck Pheasants

A great way to introduce someone to the sport of hunting is through small game hunting. Starting October 22^nd, the ODNR will once again be releasing ring necked pheasants on public hunting areas throughout the state. The ODNR will be releasing 14,000 rooster (male) pheasants in 25 public hunting areas with release dates scheduled for 10/22 (First Youth Season), 10/29 (Second Youth Season), 11/4 (Opening Day), 11/11 and 11/24 (Thanksgiving). A few reminders to keep you safe and within the law. All hunters are required to have a valid Ohio Hunting License. Season dates are 11/4/2022 – 01/08/2023. The daily bag limit is 2 rooster pheasants. Should you encounter a hen they are off limits. Youth hunters must have taken a Hunter Safety Course or hunt under the apprentice program.

If this will be your first-time pheasant hunting, there are a few items you may want to purchase to help you successfully harvest your birds. For starters most hunters hunt with shotguns loaded with Hi-brass #4, #5 or #6 shot. In addition, you will want an upland game vest and brush pants. Blaze orange vest and hat are optional meaning they are not required by law but from a safety standpoint highly recommended. Having a well-trained dog is a huge plus but not a necessity. Pheasants can be hunted without dogs.

After you harvest your pheasants, you can field dress and pluck for whole bird presentation, or you can also de-breast the bird. Either way you will be in for a tasty treat!
