Buying Fishing Rods For Sale Online

Fishing rods are going to be one of the most important pieces of equipment for fishing for obvious reasons. They are the backbone of our favorite hobby, and need to be dialed in with the right fishing rod if you want to catch fish. There are a few types of fishing rods like baitcaster rods, spinning rods, fly rods, spincast rods, and fishing poles. There are also different lengths, weights, and strengths for different types of fishing. Typically, the most common rod setup is a 6’6” to 7’ rod that is medium to medium light power with fast or moderate-fast action with a 2000-3000 size spinning reel. For this some of the best options are:

Fishing Pole Vs Fishing Rods

fishing rods, fishing rods for sale, spinning rods, fishing rod store, fishing poles, fishing poles for sale

Believe it or not there actually is a difference between “fishing poles” and “fishing rods”. A fishing pole is typically a simple no-reel setup, just a pole or stick with line tied to the end. They are mostly cane poles, telescopic poles, or found in kids fishing setups. Fishing Rods on the other hand has an actual rod made of graphite, fiberglass, or composite, guides for the line, a reel seat where your spinning reel or baitcaster reel is placed. These setups are what most anglers are using for bass, walleye, pike, etc. People will use them interchangeably but there are important differences to be aware of! Poles are really great for multispecies angling, of micro fishing when targeting much smaller species, but can also be very effective for panfish.

Fishing Pole Vs Fishing Rods

There are quite a few different types of fishing rods for sale, each having their own purpose, advantages, and used for different reasons. The main kinds of fishing rods are Baitcaster Rods, Spinning Rods, Fly Rods, Trolling Rods, Spincast Rods, and Ice Fishing Rods.

Baitcaster Rods

Baitcasting rods are a little more advanced than other fishing setups, they have a baitcasting reel mounted on the top and the spool spins during casting. They are great for precision casting and heavier lures which is why many bass anglers love using them to cast into tricky and tight spots near downed trees, docks, and other cover. They also provide better power and control when catching big fish which is why they are mostly used for largemouth bass, northern pike, and musky. There is a learning curve when using baitcasters though, as you can get a backlash known as a “birds nest” and those can be a pain to untangle. I personally use baitcaster rods when I am fishing in Canada for big pike and musky.

Spinning Rods

Spinning rods are paired with a spinning reel mounted underneath with line feeding off a fixed spool. These are great all purpose fishing rods as they are one of the most versatile setups. They’re very beginner friendly, can handle light lures well, and have minimal tangling when using proper line weight setups. They are most commonly used for bass, walleye, trout, and panfish. Spinning rods are my go-to for every day fishing, if I am throwing around small to medium sized lures and looking to catch whatever will bite.

Fly Fishing Rods

Fly Fishing Rods exist in a category of their own, a specialized rod with a fly reel, and weighted fly line to cast lightweight flies. Flies are used to imitate smaller prey like insects, grubs, minnows, and even fish eggs. Fly fishing is incredibly precise in both casting and presentation, and a great choice for clear water. It is a very engaging and technical strategy, but incredibly rewarding when you catch fish on fly. I will use my fly fishing rod when I am targeting trout, steelhead, or even smallmouth bass sometimes.

Trolling Rods

While not the most common, trolling rods are heavy duty rods designed to drag lures behind a moving boat. They are excellent at covering large areas of water to locate fish. Built with strength, durability, and able to handle large fish, big lures, and deep diving lures, they are perfect when trolling for walleye, salmon, lake trout, and striped bass. Spincast Rods

A spincast rod is in combination with a spincast reel which is a push-button reel with a closed face. These are very beginner friendly, and great for casual fishing. They are incredibly easy to set up, affordable, and accessible for all anglers, and won’t give you any backlash issues. They may not be as accurate or durable as other options but they are maybe the best way to introduce people to fishing, especially for panfish, small bass, and stocked trout.

Ice Fishing Rods

Ice fishing rods are another setup that is very specific. They are short rods designed for fishing through holes in ice, dropping bait or a lure straight down, you will not get much casting power from these. They are for jigging or dead-sticking on frozen lakes, ultra-sensitive for detecting bites, and designed for cold to not freeze up on you. When using an ice fishing rod you can target perch, crappie, walleye, northern pike, or any fish that is living under the ice.

Fishing Rod Type What It Is How It’s Used / Best Weight Combos Best Lures & Baits Best Species To Target
Baitcaster Rods Baitcasting rods are designed for precision casting, heavy cover fishing, and maximum control with larger lures and heavier line setups. Typically paired with medium-heavy to heavy power setups using 10-25 lb line and lure weights from 1/4 oz to 2 oz. Jigs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, frogs, swimbaits, crankbaits, Texas rigs, and buzzbaits. Bass, northern pike, musky, walleye, catfish, and inshore saltwater species.
Spinning Rods Spinning rods are versatile, easy-to-use rods built for spinning reels mounted underneath the rod, making them ideal for finesse techniques and lighter lures. Commonly used in light to medium-heavy setups with 4-15 lb line and lure weights from 1/16 oz to 3/4 oz. Ned rigs, drop shots, tubes, soft plastics, inline spinners, jerkbaits, live bait rigs, and small crankbaits. Bass, trout, panfish, walleye, perch, salmon, and steelhead.
Spincast Rods Spincast rods are beginner-friendly rods designed for push-button reels that simplify casting and reduce line tangles. Usually paired with light or medium power setups using 6-12 lb line and lure weights from 1/8 oz to 1/2 oz. Bobbers, worms, live bait, beetle spins, lightweight jigs, and small spinnerbaits. Bluegill, crappie, perch, trout, panfish, and smaller bass.
Fly Rods Fly rods are specialized rods built for fly fishing using weighted fly line rather than traditional lure weight for delicate presentations. Measured by fly line weight instead of lure weight, typically ranging from 3-weight to 10-weight setups. Dry flies, streamers, nymphs, wooly buggers, poppers, and other artificial flies. Trout, salmon, steelhead, bass, carp, panfish, and saltwater gamefish.
Trolling Rods Trolling rods are durable rods built for pulling lures or live bait behind a moving boat while targeting larger fish. Generally heavy-action setups with 15-80 lb line and larger trolling rigs or deep-diving lures. Spoons, crankbaits, plugs, flasher rigs, trolling flies, and live bait harnesses. Walleye, salmon, lake trout, musky, striped bass, and offshore gamefish.
Ice Fishing Rods Ice fishing rods are short, highly sensitive rods designed for vertical fishing through ice holes in cold-weather conditions. Most setups use ultralight to medium power rods with 2-10 lb line and small jigging presentations. Tungsten jigs, spoons, live minnows, wax worms, soft plastics, and deadsticks. Perch, crappie, bluegill, walleye, trout, northern pike, and lake trout.

Fishing Rod FAQs

What size fishing rod should I use?

The best rod size depends on what you’re fishing for, but a 6’6” to 7’ medium power spinning rod is the most versatile choice for most anglers. It gives you a good balance of casting distance, control, and strength. Shorter rods (under 6’) are better for tight spaces and precision, while longer rods (7’+) help with casting farther and setting hooks more effectively. I lean towards a 7’ medium power spinning rod since I do a lot of fishing in and around Lake Erie, hooking up with anything from walleye, to smallmouth and steelhead so I want enough power to land those fish.

What is the difference between a spinning rod and a baitcasting rod?

A spinning rod is easier to use and better for lighter lures, making it ideal for beginners and general fishing. A baitcasting rod offers more power and accuracy, especially with heavier lures, but requires more skill to avoid line tangles (backlash). Most anglers start with spinning gear and move to baitcasting for techniques that need precision and strength.

What action and power rod do I need?

Rod power refers to strength (light, medium, heavy), while action describes how much the rod bends (fast, moderate, slow). A medium power, fast action rod is the most common all-around setup, it’s sensitive enough to feel bites but strong enough to handle a wide range of fish. Lighter rods are better for small fish and finesse techniques, while heavier rods are used for big fish and thick cover.
