They have larger and heavier pellets than birdshot, that are designed for a deeper penetration as they are for larger targets. 12 gauge shotgun slugs are a single projectile, instead of pellets, that provide a more precise shot with very heavy power and penetration. Slugs are great for deer hunting, large game hunting, and home defense. Finally, there are trap and skeet loads available in 12 gauge which, again as the name says is what you would use when shooting trap competitions, or practicing with sporting clays, they have less recoil and are less expensive that typical hunting rounds making them a great option for practice.
