High Quality Fishing Reels

Fishing reels have been essential tools for anglers since the 4th century in China, evolving over centuries into the precision-engineered gear we rely on today. A fishing reel is a mechanical device attached to a fishing rod used to deploy and retrieve fishing line with control and accuracy.Whether you're casting from shore, trolling from a boat, or jigging in deep waters, fishing reels offer the control needed to target a wide variety of fish. There are several types of fishing reels; spinning reels, baitcasting reels, spin cast reels, and fly reels, each designed to suit specific fishing techniques and skill levels. From smooth drag systems to gear ratios that match your style of fishing, modern reels are built for performance, durability, and ease of use, making them a must-have for beginners and pros alike. At Fin Feather Fur Outfitters we offer some of the best fishing reels for sale on the market to help you bring in your new PB whether you’re bass fishing with a casting rod, or walleye fishing with a trolling reel we have what you need.

Types of Fishing Reels

There are four main types of fishing reels, each designed for specific techniques and experience levels. Spinning reels are the most popular and versatile, ideal for beginners and experienced anglers alike due to their ease of use and wide range of applications. Baitcasting reels offer greater control and accuracy, especially for targeting larger fish, but require more skill to master. Spincast reels are simple, push-button reels perfect for kids and casual anglers. Fly reels, used in fly fishing, are designed for precision casting with lightweight artificial flies and specialized line. Choosing the right reel depends on your target species, fishing style, and experience level.

Spinning Reels :

Spinning reels are my personal favorite and most used fishing reel because it is so easy to use, and in general I just prefer it. They are so versatile being able to throw essentially any baits and lures and can catch anything from panfish to huge northern pike, which is what I use them for in Canada. The casting system of spinning reels makes them tangle resistant, and the smooth drag systems provide good control of the fish when fighting to bring it in.

Casting Reels :

When it comes to casting reels, also known as baitcasting reels, are my second most used fishing reels. They are better for more experienced anglers who want precision, power, and control out of their casts. The internal drag systems are stronger which makes them great for bringing in larger fish like walleye and muskie. Casting reels also have a high line capacity and strength making them great at handling heavy lines and large lures making them awesome fishing reels for harsh conditions. Overall, the size, power, and accuracy of casting reels makes them awesome for experienced anglers targeting large fish.

Spincast Reels :

Spincast reels are an iconic fishing reel, bringing an incredibly simple and affordable setup making them great for both beginners, and kids learning how to fish. The push button casting system of a spincast reel is so easy it is a literal push of a button making them such a good setup for casual anglers. The casting system also significantly decreases line tanglers and has a very low maintenance level to maintain the fishing reel. Spincast reels are great for light tackle and catching smaller species like panfish and some trout species.

Fly Fishing Reels :

Fly fishing reels are very specifically designed for fly fishing, which is a style of fishing for more advanced anglers, but they offer excellent line control and balance. A smooth drag system and high durability give fly fishing reels excellent handling when reeling in fish, and when you are fly fishing for larger species the fly fishing reel is essential for bringing in species like steelhead and salmon.

Best Fishing Reel Brands

When it comes to any fishing gear, anglers can be quite particular on the brands that they are using, and consider the best. At Fin Feather Fur Outfitters, we offer a huge selection of fishing reels for sale, but there are a couple of premium fishing reel brands we offer that many anglers consider to be some of the best.

Shimano Fishing Reels :

Shimano is known for cutting-edge technology, smooth drag systems, and fishing reels that are built to last. If you get a Shimano fishing reel you are getting all around excellence, with corrosion resistant coatings and reels that are smooth and durable for all sizes of fishing.

Penn Fishing Reels :

Penn fishing reels are built for toughness and trusted by serious anglers for its strength and reliability. With full metal bodies and excellent line capacity, Penn fishing reels are favorites for anglers target big strong fish in both fresh and salt water.

Daiwa Fishing Reels :

Daiwa creates high quality fishing reels that combine precision engineering, innovation, and sharp design making them light weight without having to sacrifice power. Daiwa fishing reels offer great balance and casting control and are an excellent choice for finesse fishing.

Choosing The Right Fishing Reel

When choosing the right fishing reel, it's important to consider several key factors to match your gear to your fishing needs. Start by identifying your target species and fishing environment light spinning reels are ideal for freshwater panfish and trout, while baitcasting reels are better suited for larger, stronger fish like big bass or muskie. Consider your experience level, as spinning and spincast reels are easier for beginners, while baitcasters offer more control for seasoned anglers. Look at the gear ratio, which affects retrieval speed, and check the drag system for smooth resistance when fighting fish. Also, match your reel to your rod and line weight for optimal balance and casting accuracy. Choosing the right reel ensures better performance, less frustration, and more successful fishing trips. If you have any questions, feel free to ask our fishing reel experts in our fishing department by calling or hitting the contact us button.

Common Questions About Fishing Reels

What type of fishing reel should I use?

It depends on your experience level and fishing style:
  • Spinning reels are the most versatile and beginner-friendly—great for casting lightweight lures and general freshwater or inshore fishing.
  • Baitcasting reels offer more control and power for experienced anglers targeting larger fish.
  • Spincast reels are simple and easy to use, ideal for kids or casual anglers.
  • Fly reels are used specifically for fly fishing and match the weight of your fly rod and line.

What size fishing reel do I need?

Choose a reel size based on the species you're targeting and the fishing environment:
  • 1000–2500 size: Ideal for light freshwater fishing (bluegill, crappie, trout).
  • 3000–4000 size: Great for bass, walleye, and inshore saltwater species.
  • 5000+ size: Designed for surf fishing or fighting large saltwater gamefish. Always match the reel size to your rod and line weight for balance and performance.
