Types of Swimbaits

When you are searching for swimbaits to fill your tackle box, there are tons of different options. There are three main types of swimbaits, that being hard body swimbaits, soft body swimbaits, and hybrid style swim baits. There are several subtypes of swimbaits in these parent categories that include:

Depending on what type of swimbait you are using, you will want to fish it and rig it differently. If you are using a soft plastic swimbait it is very common to use a jig head with them. Rigging the soft plastic body onto a weighted hook, or swim jig is great for weedless fishing, cast & retrieve style fishing, and vertical jigging. I personally like to use a weighted hook or jig head and swim the bait through the water especially when using a paddle tail swimbait. Typically if you are using a glide bait or other hard body swimbait you will tie it up like you would most jerkbaits.

Swimbaits For Different Species

Swimbaits are one of the most dynamic multi species lures on the market. Swimbaits are typically used for bass, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and striped bass. I love tossing a soft plastic swimbait for largemouth, but if you are like me and LOVE fishing cold waters for pike and musky the swimbait is bread and butter. Tossing a trout or perch style swimbait can trigger some massive pike and musky bites. Swimbaits are also great for walleye, and using smaller soft plastic swimbaits can be a knockout strategy for bluegill and crappie. If you are one of our friends who lives by the coast or down near the gulf you can also use swimbaits to catch all sorts of saltwater species like halibut, calico bass, sandbass, and rockfish.

How To Fish a Swimbait

Just as versatile are swimbaits with multi species angling, they are just as versatile with how you can fish them. Many anglers will do a slow but consistent retrieve which will mimic baitfish swimming through the water which is about as natural as it gets, but people will also mix in quick turns or pops similar to a jerkbait. You can also incorporate brief pauses to trigger a strike. This strategy is known as the “kill”. Having depth control on your swimbait is important, you want to let the swimbait fall to your desired depth before you begin to retrieve the bait. Targeting structure is always a solid fishing strategy so pitch your swimbait towards structure and work the bait out / away into deeper water. Since swimbaits can offer such a realistic representation of bait fish it is one of the best lure choices you can have when attempting to “match the hatch” which of course is trying to accurately represent what natural forage is in the waters. Finally consider your weather, in early spring for example you want to use a big swimbait moving slower through the water when targeting hungry pre-spawn fish.
