Spinnerbaits 101

According to the Bass Archives, the Shannon Twin Spin is the original spinnerbait which we now considered one of the best bass fishing lures of all time, designed by Jesse Shannon in 1915. The original spinnerbait had traits that we still see in modern spinnerbaits today like the wire arms and blades that create the classic vibrations through the water. Throughout time, there really haven’t been many fundamental changes to spinnerbaits because they have been effective at catching fish from their creation. Around the 1970s is when we started to see bigger blades and skirts to mimic larger bait fish, but for the most part spinnerbaits have been a tried and true lure for over 100 years!

Types of Spinnerbaits

I love throwing spinnerbaits, they are a great way to cover a lot of water fast. You can rip them fast through water, swim them by structure, fish them through grass, and get heavier ones to dive deeper in the water. I also love using spinnerbaits in almost any fishing situation, I personally do a lot of river fishing, and throwing a small spinnerbait into a deeper pocket can get some BIG bites! Spinnerbaits are really anything that has a spinning blade attached to it, the bodies can vary quite a bit from a jig head with a skirt, a metal bullet shape, or just a straight jig head with no skirt made for trailers, overall there area couple types of spinnerbaits including:

  • Single Balde Spinnerbaits

  • Double Blade Spinnerbaits

  • 3+ Blade Spinnerbaits

  • Twin Arm Spinnerbaits

  • Inline Spinners

  • Roostertail Spinners

  • Colorado Blade Spinnerbaits

  • Indiana Blade Spinnerbaits

Fishing Spinnerbaits For Bass

You can essentially tie on a spinnerbait all year when fishing for bass, they are super easy to tie on, cast, and retrieve which makes them really popular among bass anglers. They cover water quickly, run over cover effectively, and trigger huge reaction strikes with the flashes and vibrations of their blades. Once you have your spinnerbait tied on, throw it along grass edges, laydowns, docks, stumps, wind-blown banks, and creek channels in the spring. You can do a straight retrieve, slow roll it when its cold, or do a quick burn retrieval when bass are aggressively feeding. Another awesome way to retrieve is the “Yo-Yo” retrieve where you lift the rod tip, let the bait fall, and repeat, this is exceptionally effective around grass as it will look like a bait fish swimming in and out of the grasses.

Making Spinnerbait Mods

Easily the most common modification anglers make to their spinnerbaits is adding a trailer. This can be a paddle tail swimbait, win tail grub, or spilt tail trailers, these create a bigger profile, slow down the fall rate, create more action for the bait, and overall help performance in colder water. There is also adding a trailer hook which helps catch short-striking bass, useful at high pressured lakes, and great in open water. Overall a trailer hook helps land those fish that are swiping, or just curious about your lure and not fully committing. Changing your skirt is super common for spinnerbaits based on the water color, or type of baitfish you are mimicking. A trimmed skirt can lower the profile of the bait, sometimes to get bites you need to downsize, encourage faster strikes, and the smaller profile can benefit in pressured waters. Finally, changing the blades on your spinnerbait can create huge results. Willow blades add more flash on a faster retrieve, Colorado blades add more vibration on a slower retrieve, and Indiana blades are a solid mix of both. The blade color can also make an impact, gold blades great for stained water or cloudy days, while silver blades are typically better in clear water and sunny days. Painted or chartreuse blades can create a really unique and dynamic presentation for multiple situations.

Type of Spinnerbait Ideal Conditions Best Species
Single Blade Spinnerbait Muddy water, low light, night fishing, slow retrieves Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Muskie
Double Blade Spinnerbait Clear to stained water, covering water quickly, active fish Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye
3+ Blade Spinnerbait Schooling baitfish situations, high flash presentations, aggressive feeding windows Bass, Pike, Muskie
Twin Arm Spinnerbait Heavy cover, wood, grass edges, snag-prone areas Bass, Pike
Inline Spinners Streams, rivers, ponds, finesse retrieves, current seams Trout, Crappie, Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Pike
Willow Leaf Spinners Clear water, warm water, fast retrieves, sparse vegetation Bass, Walleye, Pike
Colorado Blade Spinnerbaits Cold water, stained water, slow rolling deep, maximum vibration Largemouth Bass, Pike, Muskie
Indiana Blade Spinnerbaits Mixed water clarity, moderate speed retrieves, all-purpose conditions Bass, Walleye, Pike

Strike King spinnerbaits aren’t going to break the bank because they are super affordable and have a ton of variety in sizes from micro spinnerbaits to jumbo sizes as well. The Strike King Micro-King is a classic mini spinnerbait perfect for creeks while something like the Strike King Tour Grade Compact Double Willow Spinnerbait is an absolute stud at catching fish.

Booyah

Booyah spinnerbaits are incredibly versatile, making a model for almost every fishing situation. Many anglers consider Booyah to be a “best bang for your buck” spinnerbait brand their come armed with sharp hooks, durable wire frames, and take advantage of all blade styles, really specializing in Colorado blade spinnerbaits which is what I personally use them for. One of their best spinnerbaits is the Booyah Blade Double Colorado Spinnerbait.

Blue Fox

Blue Fox is the classic inline spinner, and fox tail spinnerbait this being a spinning blade with a small tube or bullet shape, followed by a small treble hook or fox tail at the end. These spinners beautifully mimic baitfish in the water and are an excellent choice for creek and river fishing. I use these all the time when fishing local rivers and have caught smallmouth bass, trout, panfish, and when using jumbo sizes even pike on these classic spinnerbaits. Try using the Blue Fox Classic Vibrax.

Questions About Spinnerbaits

When should I use a spinnerbait for bass?

Spinnerbaits work best when bass are feeding in shallow to mid-depth water and reacting to movement and vibration. Spinnerbaits create flash and vibration, which helps bass find it even when visibility is low or fish are actively chasing bait. Fish a spinnerbait on windy days, cloudy and overcast skies, stained or muddy water, and around shallow grass and other cover.

Do I need a trailer or trailer hook on a spinnerbait?

It isn’t totally necessary, but adding a trailer hook will help improve landing fish on short striking fish, and are really helpful in open water. You do not NEED one but it will help increase how many fish you land.

What size spinnerbait should I use for bass?

The most common spinnerbait size is 3/8 oz and a great all around option that has a good combo of flash and sink rate. ¼ oz spinnerbaits are great for shallow water and in calm conditions. ½ oz is a bit heavy but it is a great choice when fishing windy conditions and need to sink into deeper water, while a ¾ oz or bigger is used for deep edges, ledges, drop offs, heavy current and other harsh conditions also use for bigger fish.
