Crankbaits 101

A crankbait is a hard body fishing lure with a plastic or metal lip that forces it to swim down in the water with a wiggle action, usually designed to imitate wounded or fleeing baitfish. Crankbaits are arguably the most iconic bass fishing hard bait of all time, and there are tons of options to back that up! The crankbait was invented in 1915 with the original being called the “creek chub wiggler” developed by the Creek Chub Bait Company. In 1936 Lauri Rapala created his own version which became THE minnow-style lure which completely revolutionized the swimming bait industry. Rapala crankbaits went on to make high-quality wobbling crankbaits while other companies like “Big O” introduced balsa wood crankbaits to the market in the 1960s.

Crankbait FAQs

When should I use a crankbait?

Use crankbaits when fish are holding at specific depths you can reach with the lure, such as near structure or drop-offs. Match the bait’s diving depth to the water column where fish are likely feeding, and consider weather and water temperature, crankbaits often excel when fish are moving and water temperatures are moderate.

How do I fish a crankbait effectively?

Cast the crankbait and use a steady retrieve, varying speed until fish respond. Let the bait deflect off structure like rocks, wood, or docks, this interrupted action often triggers strikes. Sometimes a “crank–pause–crank” retrieve works best, especially when fish are less aggressive.

Why isn’t my crankbait diving to the correct depth?

A crankbait may not reach its rated depth if you’re using the wrong line type or weight. For example, braid or lighter monofilament can reduce how deep a bait runs compared to fluorocarbon, which sinks and helps the lure dive deeper. Adjust your line choice or weight to better match the depth you’re targeting.
